One day Rabbit said to himself, “It’s too dry here. I need some water. I can drink dew in the mornings, but that isn’t enough.” So Brother Rabbit went to Brother Fox. He said, “Brother Fox, we all need water. Let’s dig a well.” So Fox went and called all the other animals together. “Come. Let’s dig a well for our water,” he said. He got Brother Bear, Brother Possum, and Brother Coon. When the animals had decided where to dig the well, they start to dig, and they asked Brother Rabbit to help them. "Don't forget, boy. Don't forget," the boy repeat. “I’m sick,” said lazy Brother Rabbit “Come on,” they said. “Help us dig this well. We all need water.” Rabbit said, “Oh, I don’t need water. I can drink dew in the morning.” So he didn’t help. But when the other animals finished digging, he wanted some of the water. Of course, the other animals didn’t let Rabbit take any water from the well, but he went at night and got a pan full of water. The next day the angry animal saw Rabbit’s footprints by the well. “What can we do about Brother Rabbit?” they asked. “He thinks he is better than we are. He thinks he is the cleverest animal of all.” Bear said, “I’ll tell you. I’ll sit here by the well all night and catch him.” So Bear sat by the well, but he went to sleep. Again Rabbit came and quietly stole some water. “We must catch Brother Rabbit,” the animals said the next day. “How can we do it?” Each animal spoke more excitedly than the one before. Brother Bear was the angriest of all, and he spoke the most loudly. Then Brother Fox wanted to speak, and Brother Bear told the other animals to listen to him. “Brother Fox will know what to do,” he said. “I know how to catch him,” said Brother Fox. “Let’s make a tar baby and put it near the well. A tar baby is the best thing. That night Brother Rabbit went to the well to get some water. He saw the tar baby and thought it was Brother Bear. “I can’t get any water tonight,” he thought. “There ‘s Brother Bear waiting for me again.” He looked a second time and said, “No, that isn’t Bear. He’s too little to be Brother Bear.” Rabbit went up to the tar baby and said, “Boo-oo-oo!” The tar baby didn’t move. The Rabbit put his face near the tar baby’s face and said again, “Boo!” The tar baby didn’t speak. Rabbit ran around and around the tar baby and put his hand near the tar baby’s face, but the tar baby stood still. “I think that’s only a piece of wood,” Rabbit said, “or perhaps it’s a sleeping man.” Now he stood in front of the tar baby. “Hello, old man. What are you doing here?” he yelled. The tar baby didn’t answer. “Don’t you hear me?” asked Rabbit. “Speak, or I’ll hit you.” The tar baby said nothing, so Rabbit hit him. His hand stuck to the tar. “Let me go. You were pretending that you were sleeping. Let me go, or I’ll hit you with my other hand,” yelled Rabbit angrily. Of course, the tar baby said nothing, so Rabbit hit him with his other hand. It stuck, too. “Let me go, or I’ll kick you,” said Rabbit. The tar baby didn’t say anything, so Rabbit kicked him and his foot stuck in the tar. Poor Rabbit! He didn’t know when to stop. He kicked with his other foot, and it stuck, too. The other animals were hiding in the grass, and when they saw Brother Rabbit stuck in the tar baby, they all ran out. “We’ve caught you,” they said. “We are more clever than you. We’ve caught you, old Rabbit!” “Oh, I’m so sick,” said Rabbit. “What shall we do with him?” asked one. “Throw him into a fire,” said another. “Please, please throw me into a fire,” said Rabbit. “I’m so cold.” “No, we can’t do that,” the other animals said. “He likes the fire.” One said, “Hang him,” but another said, “He’s too light to hang.” Finally they said to Brother Rabbit, “We’re going to throw you into the water with a stone around your neck.” “Oh, yes,” Rabbit said. “I love the water. Throw me in now. I want to visit my friend Brother Fish.” “We can’t do that,” the animals said. “Let’s throw him into the brier patch.” “No, no,” cried Rabbit, “please don’t do that. The brier will tear my feet. They‘ll tear my skin. They’ll tear my eyes out.” So the other animals picked Rabbit up and threw him into the brier patch. As Rabbit ran away through the briers, he yelled, ”This is the nicest place I know of. This is my home. I was born in a brier patch.”

วันหนึ่ง Rabbit พูดกับตัวเองว่า “ที่นี่แห้งแล้งเกินไป ฉันต้องการน้ำ ฉันดื่มน้ำค้างได้ในตอนเช้า แต่มันไม่เพียงพอ” ดังนั้น คุณพี่ Rabbit จึงไปหา คุณพี่ Fox แล้วพูดว่า “พี่ชาย Fox, พวกเราต้องการน้ำ ช่วยกันขุดบ่อเถอะ” ดังนั้น Fox จึงไปเรียกสัตว์ชนิดอื่น ๆ “มา! พวกเรามาขุดบ่อ เพื่อน้ำสำหรับพวกเราเถอะ” เขาได้เพื่อนมาร่วมงาน คือ คุณพี่ Bear, คุณพี่ Possum, และ คุณพี่ Coon เมื่อบรรดาสัตว์ตกลงใจที่จะขุดบ่อ พวกมันก็เริ่มขุด และเรียกร้องให้ คุณพี่ Rabbit มาช่วยพวกมัน “ฉันป่วย น่ะ!” คุณพี่ Rabbit จอมขี้เกียจบอก “มาน่า !” บรรดาสัตว์เรียกร้อง “ช่วยพวกเราขุดบ่อนี้ พวกเราทั้งหมดต้องการน้ำ” Rabbit พูดว่า “ฉันไม่ต้องการน้ำ ฉันดื่มน้ำค้างตอนเช้าได้” และ มันไม่ช่วยขุด แต่ เมื่อสัตว์อื่น ๆ ช่วยกันขุดบ่อน้ำจนสำเร็จ เจ้า Rabbit ก็ต้องการน้ำด้วย แน่นอนว่า บรรดา คุณพี่ สัตว์ทั้งหลาย ย่อมจะไม่ยอมให้ เจ้า Rabbit ใช้น้ำจากบ่อนี้ แต่ มันมาตอนกลางคืน และ นำน้ำไปเต็มกะทะทีเดียว วันต่อมา บรรดา คุณพี่สัตว์ ก็ต้องโกรธที่เห็นรอยเท้าของเจ้า Rabbit ที่ข้าง ๆ บ่อน้ำ “เราจะทำอะไรกับ คุณพี่ Rabbit ?” ต่างถามกันเอง “เขาคิดว่าเขาเก่งกว่าพวกเรา เขาคิดว่าเขาเป็นสัตว์ที่ฉลาดกว่าสัตว์ทั้งมวล” Bear พูดว่า “ฉันจะบอกพวกเรา ฉันจะนั่งข้าง ๆ บ่อน้ำทั้งคืน และ จับเขา” ดังนั้น Bear จึงนั่งข้างบ่อน้ำ แต่ เขาเผลอหลับไป Rabbit มาเงียบ ๆ และ ขโมยน้ำไปได้อีก “พวกเราต้องจับ คุณพี่ Rabbit ให้ได้” บรรดาสัตว์พูดกันในวันต่อมา “เราจะทำได้อย่างไร?” แต่ละชนิดสัตว์พูดด้วยความตื่นเต้นกว่าครั้งก่อน คุณพี่ Bear เป็นผู้ที่โกรธที่สุด และ พูดเสียงดังที่สุด แล้ว คุณพี่ Fox ก็ต้องการพูด คุณพี่ Bear จึงบอกสัตว์อื่น ๆ ให้ฟัง คุณพี่ Fox ว่า “คุณพี่ Fox รู้ว่าจะทำอะไร!” คุณพี่ Fox บอกว่า “ฉันรู้ว่าจะจับเขาอย่างไร พวกเราช่วยกันทำ ทารกน้ำมัน สักตัวหนึ่ง แล้ววางมันไว้ข้างบ่อน้ำ ทารกน้ำมัน เป็นสิ่งที่ดีที่สุด” คืนนั้น คุณพี่ Rabbit ไปที่บ่อน้ำเพื่อจะนำน้ำไปใช้ มันเห็น ทารกน้ำมัน แต่คิดว่าเป็น คุณพี่ Bear จึงคิดว่า “ฉันคงจะไม่ได้น้ำในคืนนี้ คุณพี่ Bear นั่งรอฉันอยู่ตรงนั้นอีกแล้ว” มันมองอีครั้งหนึ่ง แล้วพูดว่า “นั่นไม่ใช่ คุณพี่ Bear มันตัวเล็กเกินไปที่จะเป็น คุณพี่ Bear” เจ้า Rabbit เข้าไปหา ทารกน้ำมัน แล้วทำเสียงหลอก “บู้!!!!!!!!!!” ทารกน้ำมัน ไม่ขยับ เจ้า Rabbit ยื่นหน้าเข้าไปที่ใบหน้าของ ทารกน้ำมัน และทำเสียงหลอก “บู้!!!!!!!!!!” อีก ทารกน้ำมัน ก็ไม่พูด เจ้า Rabbit จึงวิ่งวนไปรอบ ๆ แล้วยื่นมือไปที่ใบหน้าของ ทารกน้ำมัน แต่ มันก็ยังยืนนิ่งเฉย “ฉันคิดว่านั่นคงเป็นเพียงเศษไม้ชิ้นหนึ่ง หรือ บางทีอาจจะเป็นคนที่กำลังหลับ” เจ้า Rabbit คิด แล้วมายืนที่หน้า ทารกน้ำมัน และตะโกนทักทายว่า “ฮัลโหล, ตาแก่! กำลังทำอะไรอยู่ที่นี่?” ทารกน้ำมัน ไม่ได้ตอบ เจ้า Rabbit พูดต่อไปว่า “ไม่ได้ยินฉันพูด หรือไง? พูดซิ! ไม่งั้นฉันจะ อัด แก” แต่ ทารกน้ำมัน ไม่พูดอะไรทั้งสิ้น ดังนั้นเจ้า Rabbit จึงตบมัน มือข้างที่ตบ ติด ใน น้ำมัน “ปล่อยฉันนะ! แกแกล้งทำเป็นหลับหรือ? ปล่อยฉันนะ! ไม่งั้น ฉันจะ อัด แกด้วยมืออีกข้างหนึ่งของฉัน” เจ้า Rabbit ตะคอกด้วยความโกรธ และ แน่นอนว่า ทารกน้ำมัน ไม่พูดอะไรเหมือนเดิม เจ้า Rabbit จึงตบด้วยมืออีกข้างหนึ่ง ซึ่งก็ติดใน น้ำมัน เช่นเดียวกัน “ปล่อยฉันนะ! ไม่งั้นฉันจะ เตะ แก” เจ้า Rabbit พูด แต่ ทารกน้ำมัน ไม่ได้พูดอะไรตอบ เจ้า Rabbit จึงเตะ ทารกน้ำมัน เท้าของเจ้า Rabbit จึงติดกับตัว ทารกน้ำมัน เจ้า Rabbit ผู้น่าสงสาร! มันไม่รู้ว่าเมื่อไรจึงจะหยุดได้ มันเตะด้วยเท้าอีกข้างหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีคำตอบอยู่แล้วว่าต้องติดอยู่กับตัว ทารกน้ำมัน ด้วย บรรดาสัตว์ที่แอบอยู่ในหญ้า เมื่อเห็นว่า คุณพี่ Rabbit ติดอยู่กับ ทารกน้ำมัน ทั้งหมดจึงปรากฏตัวออกมา “พวกเราจับแกได้แล้ว! พวกเราฉลาดกว่าแก พวกเราจับแกได้แล้ว เจ้า Rabbit แก่!” “โอ้! ฉันป่วยมาก” เจ้า Rabbit อุทธรณ์ “พวกเราจะทำอะไรกับมันดีนะ?” มีตัวหนึ่ง ถาม “โยนมันเข้ากองไฟเลย!” ตัวหนึ่ง เสนอ “ช่วยโยนฉันลงในกองไฟเถอะ ฉันหนาวเหลือเกิน” เจ้า Rabbit เรียกร้อง “พวกเราทำอย่างนั้นไม่ได้ มันชอบไฟ” อีกตัวหนึ่งแย้ง “แขวนคอมัน!” เป็นอีกข้อเสนอหนึ่ง “ตัวมันเบาเกินกว่าที่จะแขวนคอ” เสียงคัดค้าน ในที่สุด พวกมันพูดกับ คุณพี่ Rabbit ว่า “พวกเราจะโยนแกลงไปในน้ำพร้อมกับก้อนหินถ่วงที่คอของแก” เจ้า Rabbit ตอบว่า “โอ้! เยี่ยม! ฉันชอบน้ำ โยนฉันลงไปเดี๋ยวนี้เลย! ฉันจะลงไปเยี่ยม คุณพี่ Fish” “พวกเราทำอย่างนั้นไม่ได้ พวกเราโยนมันลงไปใน พงกุหลาบป่า ดีกว่า” บรรดาสัตว์เสนอ “อย่า! อย่า! กรุณาอย่าทำอย่างนั้น ! หนามจะบาดเท้าของฉัน! มันจะฉีกหนังของฉัน! มันจะทิ่มตาของฉัน!” ดังนั้น บรรดาสัตว์จึงจับ เจ้า Rabbit ขึ้น และโยนมันลงไปใน พงกุหลาบป่า เมื่อ เจ้า Rabbit วิ่งผ่านเข้าไปใน พงกุหลาบป่า มันตะโกนว่า “ที่นี่เป็นที่ดีที่สุดที่ฉันรู้จัก ที่นี่คือบ้านของฉัน ฉันเกิดที่นี่”
